Nakshatra Guide: The 27 Lunar Mansions
A complete reference to the 27 Nakshatras, their ruling planets, deities, Ganas, Yonis, and how your birth Nakshatra shapes Dasha, compatibility, and character.
Answer in brief
The 27 Nakshatras are lunar mansions that divide the zodiac into 13°20′ segments. Your birth Nakshatra is set by the Moon's position and determines the start of your Vimshottari Dasha. Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet, deity, Gana (temperament), Yoni (animal energy), and quality that colours your mind, relationships, and life path.
What is a Nakshatra?
While the 12 Rashis divide the zodiac by the Sun's yearly path, the 27 Nakshatras divide it by the Moon's monthly path. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20′ and contains four Padas of 3°20′.
The Nakshatra of your birth Moon is one of the most important data points in Vedic astrology. It determines:
- The starting planet and balance of your Vimshottari Dasha.
- Your Gana (Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa temperament).
- Your Yoni (animal archetype used in compatibility).
- Your Nadi (used in marriage matching).
- The deity and mythic theme that underlies your emotional nature.
How do I find my Nakshatra?
A Nakshatra calculator takes your birth date, time, and place and computes the Moon's exact sidereal longitude. Dividing that longitude by 13°20′ gives the Nakshatra number. The remainder tells which Pada (quarter) the Moon occupies.
For example, a Moon at 23°15′ in Mesha (Aries) falls in Bharani(13°20′–26°40′ Aries), Pada 3. That Pada falls in the Navamsa of Mithuna (Gemini), adding a Mercurial flavour to the Venus-ruled Nakshatra.

How Nakshatra shapes your Dasha
Vimshottari Dasha begins with the lord of your birth Nakshatra. If you are born in Rohini, your first Dasha is Moon (Chandra). If you are born in Magha, it is Ketu. The balance of that first Dasha depends on how much of the Nakshatra the Moon had already crossed at birth.
This is why accurate birth time matters: a few minutes can change the Dasha balance and sometimes the Nakshatra itself if the Moon is near a boundary.
Nakshatra in compatibility (Ashtakoot)
Four of the eight Kootas in Guna Milan derive from Nakshatra:
- Tara Koota — counts Nakshatra from one partner's Moon to the other's.
- Yoni Koota — compares the animal Yonis for physical harmony.
- Gana Koota — compares Deva / Manushya / Rakshasa temperaments.
- Nadi Koota — checks the Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, Antya) derived from Nakshatra.
